When Xenothreat Met 30K
"Alright, new citizens, listen up!" Commander Apex's voice crackled through the squadron comms as twelve ships from the 30KFUN community formed up near Port Olisar. "Today's your first Xenothreat event, and yes, I know half of you just learned to take off yesterday without exploding."
Nervous laughter rippled through the channel.
"That was ONE time," protested Nebula_Newbie in her rented Aurora.
"It was three times," corrected Whiskey_Tango, piloting his battle-scarred Vanguard. "But hey, we've all been there. I once ejected myself into space because I thought the eject button was the landing gear."
The formation approached the mission marker where a massive Idris-class frigate hung in space, surrounded by defensive turrets. The objective was clear: board the vessel, defend it against Xenothreat fighters, and push back the invasion threatening Stanton.
"Remember the plan," Apex continued. "Veterans take point, new players stay in formation. If anyone gets confused, just ask. There are no stupid questions in 30KFUN—"
"What if I accidentally shoot the Idris?" asked a voice.
"Okay, THAT would be a stupid action, but still not a stupid question. Don't do that, Rookie_Seven."
As they closed in, the first wave of Xenothreat fighters screamed into view—red hostile markers painting the HUD like angry Christmas lights.
"BREAK BREAK BREAK!" Apex called.
The squadron scattered into their practiced formations. Whiskey_Tango and the veteran pilots surged forward, their ships dancing through space with practiced precision. Behind them, the newer players tried to keep up, their movements less graceful but no less enthusiastic.
Nebula_Newbie's Aurora shuddered as laser fire splashed across her shields. "I'm hit! I'm hit! What do I do?"
"Power to shields, honey," came the calm voice of Mama_Bear in her Cutlass Red. "Divert from weapons, bottom right MFD. I'm on your six, covering you."
"I can't find the—wait, got it!"
"Good! Now get behind that Hammerhead. Use it for cover while your shields recharge."
The battle raged. Xenothreat fighters exploded in brilliant fireballs. The 30KFUN pilots coordinated with the practiced ease of a community that had flown together through countless bugs, disconnects, and the infamous 30K errors that had inspired their name.
Then it happened.
Rookie_Seven's Gladius simply... stopped. Frozen in space mid-maneuver, his ship became a sitting duck as enemy fighters converged on his position.
"Uh, guys? I can't move. My controls are locked!"
"Classic desync," Whiskey_Tango said, already adjusting course. "Hang tight, kid. Literally, you don't have a choice."
Three Vanguards formed a protective triangle around the frozen Gladius, their guns blazing. Apex's voice cut through the chaos: "Rookie, alt-F4 and reconnect. We'll keep you alive."
"But I'll lose all my progress!"
"You'll lose more if you explode. Trust the process. We've done this dance before."
Rookie_Seven's ship vanished as he force-quit the game. The veterans tightened their formation, covering the empty space where their frozen comrade had been.
Thirty seconds later, Rookie_Seven's Gladius popped back into existence, systems rebooting.
"I'm back! Holy crap, you guys actually—"
"Kept you alive? That's what we do," Mama_Bear said warmly. "Now get back in formation. We've got Xenothreat to smash."
The tide of battle shifted. More 30KFUN members answered the call, jumping in from other systems. The local chat filled with their signature callouts and terrible puns.
"Xenothreat? More like Xeno-TREAT, because we're eating them for lunch!"
"That was awful, Pun_Daddy."
"You're welcome."
As the last wave of enemy fighters approached, disaster struck again. The server hiccupped. Half the squadron's ships began rubber-banding—teleporting forward and backward in space, their positions desyncing wildly.
"Not now!" Apex groaned. "We're so close!"
"Everybody stay calm!" Whiskey_Tango called out. "Reduce speed to SCM. Stop making hard turns. Let the server catch up."
"But they're right on top of us!"
"Then we fight at walking speed. It's not the first time we've made this work."
What followed was the strangest space battle any of them had experienced. Ships limped through space at reduced speeds, trading fire with Xenothreat fighters while the server wheezed like an asthmatic space whale. The veterans called out targets, coordinating fire to compensate for the lag. The newer players followed their lead, learning to adapt on the fly.
"Target the one at 045! Three... two... one... FIRE!"
Six ships unleashed simultaneously. The delayed server registered all the hits at once, and the enemy fighter vanished in a spectacular explosion.
"It's like the universe's worst turn-based strategy game," Nebula_Newbie laughed.
"And we're WINNING!" Rookie_Seven whooped.
The final Xenothreat fighter fell. The Idris was secure. The mission complete notification appeared on everyone's screens, along with the promise of those coveted blueprints.
"YES!" The comms erupted in celebration.
"Alright, alright," Apex said, but they could hear the smile in his voice. "Good work, everyone. Especially our new citizens. You just survived your first Xenothreat event AND a server meltdown. That's basically the full Star Citizen experience."
"Do we get certificates?" asked Nebula_Newbie.
"Better. You get bragging rights and a spot on next week's bounty hunting expedition."
"Will there be more bugs?"
"Oh, absolutely."
"Will we get disconnected?"
"Probably."
"Will it be fun anyway?"
Whiskey_Tango laughed. "Kid, you're starting to understand what 30KFUN is all about."
As the squadron formed up for the flight back to Port Olisar, Mama_Bear spoke up: "Hey, Rookie_Seven, Nebula_Newbie—you two did great today. When we land, check out the guides on our website. We've got tutorials on ship combat, dealing with bugs, and all the weird stuff you'll encounter."
"Are they actually helpful?" Rookie_Seven asked.
"They're screen-reader friendly, organized, and written by people who've actually played the game," Apex said. "Unlike some guides out there that assume everything works perfectly."
"Which it never does," added Pun_Daddy.
"Which it NEVER does," Apex agreed. "But that's okay. Because when the game breaks, we don't. That's the 30KFUN guarantee."
The ships jumped to quantum travel, leaving the battlefield behind. In the distance, the Xenothreat capital ships began their retreat, driven back by the combined efforts of the system's defenders.
"Same time next week?" Nebula_Newbie asked hopefully.
"Wouldn't miss it," Whiskey_Tango replied. "Though next week we're doing the mining tutorial. Much more relaxing."
"Will there be bugs?"
"Oh honey," Mama_Bear chuckled. "There are ALWAYS bugs. But there's also always friends to help you through them. That's what makes it worth it."
As Port Olisar grew larger in their viewports, Rookie_Seven's ship suddenly froze again, completely motionless in space.
A beat of silence.
Then Rookie_Seven's resigned voice: "Are you kidding me?"
The entire squadron burst into laughter.
"Welcome to 30KFUN, kid," Apex said warmly. "Alt-F4 and reconnect. We'll wait for you. We always do."
And they did.
