The Quantum Guardians of Pyro Pass

Commander Vex squinted at his ship's radar. The blips of incoming hostiles were multiplying faster than quantum fuel prices during Invictus.

"30KFUN squadron, this is Commander Vex. We've got a problem at Pyro Gateway. Multiple Eclipse bombers inbound, and they're not here for the scenery." His voice crackled through the comms. "Form up on my position. Looks like someone's trying to blockade new players from entering Stanton again."

Five ships emerged from quantum travel in perfect formation around Vex's Gladius. The 30KFUN emblem—a smiling face with the numbers "30K" crossed out—gleamed on their hulls.

"Raven here. Just finished helping some newbies earn their first 100K. What's the situation?" The sleek Sabre cut through space with practiced precision.

"Blockade busting, my favorite!" Stellar's Vanguard Warden powered up its weapons. "Hey, did anyone bring those screen-reader friendly nav charts we made last week? I promised to share them with the new players once we clear this mess."

"Got 'em loaded," replied Doc, piloting a Mercury Star Runner. "Along with the mining guides. But first, let's deal with these troublemakers."

The comm channel suddenly filled with static before a new voice broke through. "This is Rookie. I'm—kzzzt—under fire near—kzzzt—need assist—" The transmission cut off abruptly.

"Looks like our newest member found trouble," said Vex. "Phantom, take point with me. Doc and Stellar, flank right. Raven and Shadow, go rescue Rookie. Remember, we fly together, we crash together."

"30KFUN forever!" they responded in unison.

As the squad broke formation, Phantom's Scorpius rolled elegantly beside Vex. "Five credits says the server crashes before we finish this fight."

"Not taking that bet," Vex laughed. "But if we get 30K'd, we meet back at Grim HEX in fifteen."

The first wave of hostiles appeared—three Eclipse bombers escorted by Arrows and Gladiuses. Their targeting systems locked onto the incoming civilian ships trying to pass through the gateway.

"Doc, deploy countermeasures!" Vex commanded as he dove into the fray, guns blazing.

Doc's Mercury released a cloud of radar-jamming chaff. "Deploying electronic warfare suite. Their targeting systems should be scrambled for about thirty seconds."

Stellar's deep voice rumbled through comms. "That's all the time I need." His Warden unleashed a barrage of missiles, forcing the hostiles to break formation.

Meanwhile, Raven and Shadow raced toward Rookie's distress signal. They found a damaged Avenger Titan trying to evade two pursuing fighters.

"Rookie, this is Raven. Cut engines for three seconds, then full reverse thrust when I mark."

"But that'll make me a sitting duck!" Rookie protested.

"Trust the process," Shadow chimed in. "We've practiced this maneuver a hundred times."

Reluctantly, Rookie cut power. The pursuing ships closed in for the kill.

"Now!" Raven called.

Rookie slammed into reverse as Raven and Shadow's ships screamed past on either side, unleashing a perfect crossfire that shredded the pursuers.

"Holy—that worked!" Rookie exclaimed.

"Welcome to 30KFUN tactics," Shadow replied. "Where we turn game mechanics into art."

Back at the main battle, Vex and Phantom were dancing through enemy fire with practiced precision when Phantom's ship suddenly froze mid-maneuver.

"Uh oh," Phantom's voice carried a hint of resignation. "I think I'm about to—"

His ship disappeared from radar.

"We've got our first 30K casualty," Vex announced. "Phantom will rejoin us after restart."

Doc sighed. "At least it wasn't all of us this time."

The battle intensified as they pushed the blockaders back from the gateway. Civilian ships began slipping through, thanking the 30KFUN squadron over open channels.

Just as victory seemed certain, every ship in the area began to stutter and lag.

"Server's getting unstable," Stellar warned. "Finishing moves, people!"

Vex targeted the lead Eclipse. "For the newbies of the 'verse!"

His final shots connected just as the familiar warning appeared on everyone's HUD: "30000 - Connection to server lost."

Two hours later, the 30KFUN squadron gathered at their secret base inside an abandoned outpost on Daymar. Rookie stood before the veteran members, receiving an official 30KFUN patch for their flight suit.

"Despite losing connection three times," Vex announced proudly, "we successfully escorted seventeen new players through the blockade, shared our navigation guides with twenty-three pilots, and even managed to recover that stolen cargo for the mission."

"And I only crashed into Stellar once!" Rookie added, generating laughter around the room.

"That's a new record," Doc said, pulling up a holographic display. "Now, who's up for helping me test these new mining techniques in the Aaron Halo? I've updated our guides with all the Day of the Vara special mining locations."

Phantom raised a bottle of Radegast. "To 30KFUN—where connection errors are just another excuse to regroup and try again!"

"To 30KFUN!" they cheered, as their next adventure awaited in the stars above.
