When the Server Gods Smiled
The mission briefing was simple enough: escort a Hull C through the Pyro jump point, deliver medical supplies to Grim Hex, and collect payment. What could go wrong?
Commander "Axiom" Chen should have known better than to ask.
"All right, 30KFUN, sound off," Axiom called over comms as seven ships materialized around the massive cargo hauler in orbit above Crusader. The Hull C's extended cargo spindles gleamed in the gas giant's reflected light, loaded with enough medical supplies to stock a small hospital.
"Redshift, standing by in the Hornet," came the first response.
"Beacon here, Cutlass Black ready to rock," added another voice, crackling with enthusiasm.
"Navigator reporting—wait, did anyone else just see their HUD flicker?" A pause. "Never mind, we're good."
Axiom grinned inside his Vanguard Sentinel's cockpit. Navigator was new to the community, still learning to distinguish between actual bugs and the game's intentional atmospheric effects. Two weeks ago, she'd panicked during her first quantum jump, convinced her ship was disintegrating. The whole squadron had laughed about it afterward during their debrief stream.
"All wings report in," Axiom continued. Three more pilots checked in—Whisper in a Sabre, Forge flying a Constellation Andromeda, and Rookie (who'd been with them for three years but refused to change his callsign) in a trusty Avenger Titan.
"Hull C pilot 'Hauler-Dan' confirms ready," added the transport's pilot, a community member who'd joined 30KFUN after they'd rescued him from a bunker mission gone sideways. He'd been stuck in an infinite elevator loop for twenty minutes before Beacon found him.
"Remember, folks," Axiom announced, "we've got new Planet Tech V5 running in the background. Servers might be spicy today. Stay flexible, watch your six, and if anyone gets a 30K..."
"We wait and regroup!" the squadron chorused in unison. It was practically the 30KFUN motto.
The journey started smoothly. Too smoothly. The Hull C lumbered through space at its characteristic pace while the escort fighters maintained a loose formation around it. Crusader's swirling clouds fell away behind them as they accelerated toward the Pyro jump point.
"Contact!" Redshift's voice cut through the comfortable chatter. "Three—no, four Cutlass Blacks, bearing 270. They're angling toward the Hull C."
"Pirates," Axiom confirmed, his sensors painting the approaching hostiles. "Probably saw our cargo manifest. All fighters, engage. Hauler-Dan, maintain course and speed. We've got this."
The peaceful escort mission erupted into chaos.
Redshift's Hornet screamed past Axiom's canopy, autocannons already blazing. The lead pirate Cutlass tried to break left, but Whisper's Sabre was already there, energy weapons carving glowing lines through the black.
"They're trying to flank!" Navigator called out. "I'm on them—oh no, my targeting just—"
"Bug or feature?" Beacon asked, his Cutlass swooping in to cover Navigator's position.
"Bug! Definitely bug! My MFDs are blank!"
"Alt-F4 your targeting mode," Forge suggested calmly while his Constellation's turrets tracked another pirate. "Known issue from the patch notes."
"Which key is—found it! Oh, thank you! I'm back!"
Navigator's ship pulled hard into a turn, missiles away. One of the pirate Cutlasses bloomed into an expanding fireball.
"Nice shot!" Rookie cheered. "That's three down, one to go."
The last pirate, apparently realizing this escort was more trouble than it was worth, broke off and quantum jumped away.
"Target fled," Redshift confirmed. "Hull C is clear."
"Outstanding work, everyone," Axiom said. "Navigator, you handled that bug like a pro. Next time—"
Every ship simultaneously dropped out of quantum.
Every HUD went dark.
Every comm channel filled with static.
"Oh no," Beacon whispered into the returning silence. "Not now. Not the big one."
For five eternal seconds, seven fighters and one massive cargo ship hung frozen in space, their systems completely unresponsive. Axiom stared at his blank displays, mentally calculating how long it would take to regroup if they all got disconnected.
Then, like a switch flipping, everything came back online.
"EVERYONE SOUND OFF!" Axiom barked.
One by one, his squadron reported in. Against all odds, everyone was still connected. The server had hiccupped but held.
"Did we just... survive a 30K?" Navigator asked, awe in her voice.
"The server gods have smiled upon us," Forge intoned solemnly. "We must make an offering of screenshots to the Community Hub."
The mood turned celebratory as they continued toward Grim Hex, everyone talking over each other about their brush with disconnection. It was the kind of shared experience that turned a random group of players into a real community.
They were still congratulating themselves when they reached Grim Hex and encountered the station's infamous docking problems.
"Uh, Axiom?" Hauler-Dan's voice was carefully controlled. "The landing pad is... inside out?"
Sure enough, the designated pad was rendering as a twisted geometric nightmare, its textures flickering between solid and transparent.
"Classic Grim Hex," Whisper laughed. "Okay, who's got the workaround?"
"I do!" Navigator piped up. "I was reading through the 30KFUN guides last night. You have to request a different pad, then cancel, then request the original pad again. Refreshes the geometry."
"Look at you, teaching us tricks now," Beacon said proudly.
The workaround succeeded. The Hull C settled onto the pad, and the medical supplies were offloaded without further incident. Payment transferred. Mission complete.
"That was perfect," Rookie said as they all gathered their ships in formation for a screenshot. "Combat, bugs, near-disconnection, more bugs, and we still got it done."
"That's 30KFUN in a nutshell," Axiom agreed. "All right, everyone back to Port Olisar for debrief and drinks at the Astro Armada bar. Navigator, you're buying the first round since you saved us with that pad trick."
"Worth it!" Navigator laughed.
As the squadron jumped away from Grim Hex, their ships flying in perfect formation despite the game's best efforts to scatter them, Axiom felt that familiar warmth that kept him coming back to Star Citizen and to this community. The bugs were real, the disconnections were frequent, and the game was definitely still in alpha.
But the friendships? Those were solid as titanium.
"Hey Axiom," Beacon said over a private channel. "New player just joined the Discord. Says they're lost in a cave on microTech and their oxygen is at 10%."
Axiom checked his fuel and smiled. "Send me the coordinates. 30KFUN doesn't leave anyone behind."
"Not even for a 30K?"
"Especially not for a 30K. That's when people need us most."
Behind them, Grim Hex rotated slowly in the asteroid field, its lights flickering slightly as the server struggled with the new Planet Tech V5 running in the background. Somewhere in Stanton, other players were probably encountering bugs, getting disconnected, or stuck in geometry.
But they'd figure it out. They'd help each other. They'd laugh about it later.
That was the 30KFUN way.
