Star Citizen Alpha 3.8: New Frontiers
Star Citizen Alpha 3.8, released on December 21, 2019, brought major new features and content to the persistent universe. Dubbed "New Frontiers", this update expanded the game world and gameplay in significant ways.
Server-Side Object Container Streaming (SOCS)
One of the most important technical additions was Server-Side Object Container Streaming (SOCS). This technology allows the game servers to dynamically load and unload areas of the universe as players move around, greatly improving performance and enabling the continued expansion of the Star Citizen universe. SOCS laid the groundwork for adding more star systems and locations in the future.
microTech Planet
The frozen planet microTech was added as the fourth major planetary body in the Stanton system. Home to the microTech corporation, much of the planet is covered in snow and ice due to a terraforming accident. Harsh weather and frequent storms make exploration challenging. While the New Babbage landing zone was not yet accessible, players could land and explore the planet's surface.
Planet Tech v4
A major upgrade to the game's planet technology brought vastly improved visuals to all planets and moons. Planet Tech v4 enabled more detailed landscapes, precise terrain details, and more realistic and varied weather effects across different biomes. This dramatically enhanced the look and feel of exploring planetary surfaces.
New Missions
Several new mission types were added, including a multi-stage mission to liberate a captured Origin 890 Jump luxury ship from outlaws. This expanded the variety of gameplay available to players.
Melee Combat
For the first time, players could engage in hand-to-hand combat and stealth takedowns. This added a new dimension to first-person gameplay, allowing for close-quarters fighting with fists or knives.
ARGO MOLE Multi-Crew Mining Ship
The ARGO MOLE (Multi-Operator Laser Extractor) debuted as a new multi-crew mining vessel. With three separate mining turrets, it enabled cooperative mining gameplay for up to four players.
New Weapons
Several new weapons were introduced, including the Behring P6-LR ballistic sniper rifle and the Apocalypse Arms Animus missile launcher. These expanded the arsenal available for both ship and FPS combat.
Developer Insights
The update was accompanied by developer videos providing insight into the new features. This included a "Pillar Talk" discussion with Chris Roberts and other senior developers explaining the technology and design decisions behind Alpha 3.8.
Star Citizen Alpha 3.8 represented a major step forward for the ambitious space sim, expanding its universe and gameplay systems in significant ways. The addition of SOCS in particular laid important technical groundwork for the game's continued growth and development.
Frozen Frontiers: A 30K.fun Adventure
As the Argo MOLE descended through microTech's icy atmosphere, Captain Zara of the Star Citizen Referral Code Club gripped the controls tightly. The newly implemented Planet Tech v4 made the frozen landscape below look more breathtaking than ever, but it also meant new challenges for their mining expedition.
"Everyone ready?" Zara called out to her crew. "Remember, we're here to test the new multi-crew mining mechanics and have fun, even if we hit a 30K!"
Her co-pilot, Finn, chuckled. "That's why we joined the RSI Referral Code Club, right? To laugh in the face of bugs!"
As they touched down on a promising patch of frozen tundra, the team's comms crackled to life. "This is New Citizen Nora, what code to use to join your org? I'm lost on microTech and could use some help!"
Zara smiled, always happy to welcome new players. "Head to our org page, Nora. We'll get you sorted out and show you the ropes of this frosty planet."
Just as they were about to exit the MOLE, a group of NPCs appeared on the horizon, wielding the new Apocalypse Arms Animus missile launchers.
"Looks like we'll be testing out the new melee combat system too!" Finn exclaimed, readying his fists.
As the crew prepared for an unexpected brawl on the icy surface of microTech, Zara couldn't help but laugh. This was exactly the kind of chaotic fun The Star Citizen Referral Code Club was all about – facing new frontiers and unexpected challenges with a smile, no matter what bugs or surprises the persistent universe threw their way.
