Throwdown at the Wolf Pack
The RSI Meteor's engines roared to life as Captain Nyx_30K guided the sleek interceptor out of Port Olisar's hangar. Behind her, three Kruger L-21 Wolves formed up in tight formation, their pilots—BugSlayer, QuantumQuinn, and NewbieNav—all sporting the distinctive 30KFUN insignia on their hulls.
"Comms check, Wolf Pack," Nyx called over the channel. "Today's mission is simple: escort our newest member to the Ship Showdown event, help them earn their first 10,000 aUEC, and try not to 30K in the process."
"Copy that," replied BugSlayer, the veteran pilot whose ship bore the scars of countless battles. "NewbieNav, stick close. Remember what we practiced in the simulator."
"I'll try," came the nervous voice of NewbieNav, whose Wolf drifted slightly out of formation. "Still getting used to the sensitivity of these controls."
QuantumQuinn chuckled. "We've all been there. My first flight, I ejected accidentally while trying to open my MobiGlas."
The small fleet banked toward Crusader, the massive gas giant dominating the view as they accelerated to quantum speed. The stars stretched into brilliant blue streaks around them.
"Wait, what's that warning light?" NewbieNav asked, panic edging into their voice.
"Ah, the infamous 'imminent catastrophic failure' bug," BugSlayer said calmly. "It's lying. Just toggle your power once and—"
The quantum tunnel collapsed suddenly, leaving them drifting in unfamiliar space.
"Uh, guys? This isn't Crusader," QuantumQuinn said, checking navigation. "We're somewhere near... Pyro? That's not even in the game yet!"
Nyx sighed. "Classic quantum calibration bug. At least we didn't 30K. Everyone check your fuel levels."
Before anyone could respond, radar alerts blared across all four ships. A squadron of NPC pirates in Cutlasses emerged from behind a nearby asteroid field.
"Hostile contacts!" BugSlayer called out. "NewbieNav, remember the combat tutorial—power to shields, weapons hot, and stay in formation."
"I can't—my weapons aren't responding!" NewbieNav's voice cracked as their Wolf juked to avoid incoming fire.
Nyx's Meteor rolled into position, its shields absorbing the first volley. "Another bug. Try cycling your weapons systems. Quinn, cover them!"
QuantumQuinn's Wolf darted forward, its laser cannons tracing lines of fire through space. "On it! BugSlayer, let's flank them. Classic 30KFUN maneuver seven!"
The two veteran pilots split off, drawing fire away from NewbieNav, who frantically worked through the troubleshooting steps they'd learned from 30KFUN's screen-reader friendly combat guide.
"Got it!" NewbieNav exclaimed as their weapons came online. "What do I do now?"
"Follow my lead," Nyx commanded, her Meteor diving toward the largest pirate ship. "Target their engines first, then weapons. Remember to lead your shots!"
The battle raged across the starfield, the 30KFUN squadron working in perfect harmony despite the bugs and glitches. BugSlayer's Wolf took a hit that sent it spinning, but they recovered with a maneuver that would have been impossible if not for hours of practice during server downtime.
"Last one's making a run for it," QuantumQuinn called out. "NewbieNav, it's all yours!"
NewbieNav hesitated for just a moment before pushing their Wolf to maximum thrust. The targeting pip lined up perfectly, and they squeezed the trigger. The pirate Cutlass erupted in a spectacular explosion.
"First kill!" cheered BugSlayer. "That's going in the 30KFUN highlight reel!"
As the team regrouped, their ships' systems suddenly stabilized, and the navigation computers recalibrated.
"Looks like the server caught up with us," Nyx observed. "We should be able to quantum to the Ship Showdown now."
"That was amazing!" NewbieNav exclaimed. "I thought I'd be terrible at combat."
"That's what 30KFUN is all about," QuantumQuinn replied. "We all crash, we all bug out, but we help each other through it."
Just as they aligned for the quantum jump, all their ships' lights flickered ominously.
"Uh oh," BugSlayer muttered. "I recognize that flicker."
"Everyone, quick!" Nyx commanded. "Share coordinates in chat before—"
The universe froze. Then, one by one, their screens displayed the dreaded message: "30000 - Disconnected from server."
An hour later, they all reconvened on a fresh server, laughing as they compared notes on their phantom battle.
"Did that even happen?" NewbieNav wondered as they walked through the Ship Showdown pavilion, admiring the Final Four contenders gleaming under spotlights.
"It happened where it counts," Nyx said, pointing to the scoreboard. "Look who's on the leaderboard for today's random encounter event."
There, in fourth place: "30KFUN Squadron - Pyro Defense Force."
BugSlayer grinned. "The server may crash, but the adventure continues. That's the 30KFUN way."
"Now," QuantumQuinn said, throwing an arm around NewbieNav's shoulders, "who wants to help our rookie earn enough credits for that Kruger L-21 Wolf they've been eyeing? I hear there's a lucrative delivery mission that only occasionally teleports your packages into the center of a star."
They all laughed, already plotting their next adventure in the stars.
