Stormriders of the Broken Server
The Drake Corsair's engines hummed beneath Jackson's feet as he guided the vessel through the swirling debris field surrounding Pyro III. Behind him, three newer members of the 30KFUN community watched with rapt attention.
"So that's how you thread the needle through an asteroid field?" asked Novak, leaning forward in her seat. "I've crashed my ship seven times trying that."
"Eight times," corrected Talia with a laugh. "I was there for the Daymar incident."
Jackson grinned. "The trick is to—"
The ship suddenly lurched, controls freezing as the familiar warning flashed across all their screens: CONNECTION ERROR 30000.
"Not again!" groaned Chen, the third newcomer. "That's the third time today!"
"Welcome to the authentic Star Citizen experience," Jackson chuckled, already reaching for the restart button. "Don't worry, we'll be back in before you know it. 30KFUN didn't get its name for nothing."
Twenty minutes later, the crew reassembled on the landing pad at New Babbage, where they met up with the rest of their community squadron. Commander Eliza, the veteran org leader who had been playing since the earliest hangar module, was briefing the assembled players.
"Alright, Storm Breaker patch is still fresh, so expect the usual quirks. The mission is simple: we're running a community escort for MicroTech's new quantum-sensitive cargo. Half of us will fly protection, half will handle the haulers."
She pointed to Jackson. "Jackson, you take the newcomers in your Corsair as part of the escort wing. Dex and I will lead the haulers in our C2s."
Dex, a longtime member known for his extensive knowledge of the game's mechanics, pulled up a detailed star map on his mobiglas. "I've updated our route on the community database with screen-reader compatible waypoints. Everyone should have access now."
"Thanks, Dex," nodded Eliza. "Remember folks, if anyone gets 30K'd, we'll rendezvous at these coordinates. No player left behind—that's the 30KFUN way."
The convoy launched in formation, a beautiful sight against Microtech's snowy backdrop. Jackson's Corsair took point alongside three Gladius fighters piloted by more experienced 30KFUN members.
"This is amazing," breathed Chen as they cleared the atmosphere. "I've never been part of a coordinated fleet before."
"Just wait until we hit quantum travel together," Talia said. "It's—"
A massive explosion rocked the formation as a squadron of player pirates dropped out of quantum directly in their path.
"Hammerhead at two o'clock!" shouted Jackson into the comms. "Escort wing, defensive positions!"
The 30KFUN veterans moved with practiced precision, their ships forming a protective barrier around the cargo haulers. Jackson's Corsair banked hard, bringing its considerable firepower to bear on an approaching Cutlass Black.
"Novak, take the top turret! Talia, engineering! Chen, you're on the side guns!"
The newcomers scrambled to their stations, nervous but excited.
"Remember what we practiced in the training sessions," Jackson called out calmly as laser fire streaked past the viewport. "Lead your targets, watch your power distribution."
Novak's first volley went wide, but her second caught the Cutlass's wing, sending it spinning.
"I hit it! I actually hit something!" she shouted in triumph.
"Great shot!" Jackson encouraged. "Now watch your—"
The ship suddenly shuddered as a torpedo impact overwhelmed their shields. Warning lights flashed across the console.
"We've lost the starboard engine," reported Talia from engineering. "I'm rerouting power, but we're sitting ducks out here!"
Jackson keyed his comms. "Escort wing two, we need assistance!"
"On our way," came Dex's calm voice. "Hold tight."
Through the viewport, they watched as two 30KFUN Vanguards broke formation and streaked toward them, unleashing a barrage that drove back the attacking pirates.
"Chen, how are you holding up on those guns?" Jackson asked.
Silence.
"Chen?"
"I think he 30K'd," Talia said. "His character just froze."
Jackson nodded. "Classic. Alright, Novak, you're doing great up there. Keep the pressure on while we—"
The entire ship suddenly lurched sideways as a bug in the physics grid activated, sending the Corsair spinning wildly through space.
"What's happening?" screamed Novak, clinging to her seat.
"Just another day in the verse!" Jackson laughed, fighting with the controls. "This is why we always say: it's not about the destination in Star Citizen—it's about the friends you make along the way to the crash site!"
Two hours and several client restarts later, the 30KFUN convoy regrouped at Grim HEX. Despite the disconnections, physics anomalies, and a mysterious bug that had temporarily turned Talia's character model inside-out, they had successfully completed their mission.
Chen, back online after his disconnection, couldn't stop grinning. "That was the most chaotic, buggy, frustrating gaming experience I've ever had," he declared. "When can we do it again?"
Commander Eliza laughed. "That's the spirit! Tomorrow we're running salvage operations in the Aaron Halo. Plenty more chances for things to go spectacularly wrong."
"And for us to help each other through it," added Dex, distributing the mission payments to everyone. "That's what makes this community special. We don't just survive the 30Ks—we have fun with them."
Jackson raised his virtual drink. "To 30KFUN—where the bugs are features and the crashes are just opportunities to meet back at the bar!"
"To 30KFUN!" the group chorused, their avatars clinking glasses as, somewhere in the distance, someone's ship inexplicably launched itself through the station wall and into the void of space.
Just another perfect day in Star Citizen.
