The Last Laugh at Invictus
The Constellation Aquila's engines hummed steadily as it approached Orison's cloudy atmosphere. Inside the cockpit, Captain DarkDrifter—known to the 30KFUN community as simply "Drift"—checked the ship's systems one final time.
"Shields at 100%, quantum fuel at 83%, and comms are green across the board," he announced to his crew. "Everyone ready for Invictus?"
"As ready as we'll ever be," replied MechMaven, the group's resident ship expert. "Though I'm still not convinced bringing newbies to the busiest event of the year was the best idea."
Drift chuckled. "The 30KFUN way isn't about taking the easy path, Maven. It's about facing the chaos together."
In the ship's cargo hold, veteran member StellarSage was walking three new players through equipment checks. "Remember, Invictus is crowded. If we get separated, meet at the Aegis showroom at 1500 hours. And if the server gives you that dreaded 30K error—"
"We laugh it off and rejoin," the newbies chorused.
"Exactly," Sage grinned. "That's why we're 30KFUN. The errors are just part of the adventure."
The ship descended through Crusader's clouds, the spires of Orison appearing like floating islands in a sea of white. As they approached the landing zone, warning lights suddenly flashed across the console.
"Uh, Drift?" called out QuickSilver from the engineering station. "We've got a problem. Landing systems are glitching."
"Classic," Drift sighed. "Silver, cycle the power. Maven, take manual control. Everyone else, brace for a bumpy landing!"
The ship lurched as Maven wrestled with the controls. What should have been a smooth approach turned into a nail-biting descent that had them skidding onto the landing pad with a screech of metal.
"And that," announced Drift as the engines powered down, "is what we call 'landing with style' in the alpha 'verse."
The team disembarked, stepping out into the bustling Invictus Launch Week celebrations. Massive holographic displays showcased the latest ships, and UEE Navy personnel stood at attention near gleaming spacecraft.
"Alright team," Drift addressed the group. "The plan is to tour the exhibits, test fly what we can, then meet for the special Aegis reveal at 1400. Remember our motto—"
"Fun first, bugs second!" they replied in unison.
The group split into smaller teams, each veteran taking a newbie under their wing. StellarSage guided a wide-eyed new player named CosmicCub through the RSI pavilion, explaining the differences between ship components.
"So that's why you want to upgrade your quantum drive first," Sage explained. "Nothing worse than spending half your gameplay time in quantum travel."
"This is amazing," Cub replied, staring up at a massive Constellation Phoenix. "The guides on your website made it sound cool, but seeing it in person is—"
The ground beneath them suddenly shuddered. Display screens flickered, and several NPCs froze in place.
"Uh-oh," Sage muttered. "Server hiccup. Might be a—"
Before he could finish, both their comms pinged with messages from the rest of the team: "Anyone else's game getting choppy?" "My FPS just tanked!" "Brace for potential 30K!"
CosmicCub looked worried. "Will we lose all our progress?"
Sage laughed. "Maybe. That's part of the adventure. But we're prepared." He pointed to MechMaven, who was already rounding up team members. "Maven always says: expect the worst, plan for it, then laugh when it happens anyway."
The server stabilized momentarily, giving them a window of opportunity. Drift's voice came over comms: "Change of plans! Intel says there's a surprise Vanduul raid demonstration starting in ten minutes near the Aegis pavilion. If we hurry, we might get to participate!"
The team regrouped, jogging through increasingly laggy environments as more players flooded the server. They reached the Aegis area just as UEE Navy ships roared overhead, simulating a response to Vanduul attackers.
"Ladies and gentlemen," announced a Navy officer, "we have slots for six civilian pilots to join our demonstration. Any volunteers?"
Drift turned to the group with a gleam in his eye. "This is it! Who's in?"
The 30KFUN veterans immediately pushed their newbies forward. "These four," said Drift, "plus myself and Maven."
Minutes later, they were strapped into Aegis Gladiuses, launching from Orison into Crusader's upper atmosphere. The Navy pilots guided them into formation as simulated Vanduul ships appeared on their radars.
"Remember what we practiced in Arena Commander," Maven coached over comms. "CosmicCub, stay on my wing. NewbNova, watch your six. Everyone, call your targets."
What followed was five minutes of glorious chaos. The newbies, coached by their 30KFUN mentors, scored several hits against the simulated enemies. The crowd below watched via massive displays as the battle unfolded.
Then, just as CosmicCub lined up a perfect shot on the lead "Vanduul" ship, every display froze. The dreaded red error message appeared across screens: "30000 - Disconnected from server."
Back in the real world, the 30KFUN Discord erupted with laughter and groans.
"Did anyone see my last shot?" CosmicCub typed. "I swear I was about to take down the lead ship!"
"Of course you were," Maven replied with a laughing emoji. "The server couldn't handle your awesomeness."
"Classic Star Citizen," Drift added. "But did everyone have fun?"
The chat flooded with enthusiastic responses.
"Then our mission was accomplished," Drift wrote. "Let's regroup on Server 2 in five minutes. I hear there's an Argo cargo race starting soon, and 30KFUN never misses a chance to show that even cargo haulers can fly with style."
As they reconnected one by one, CosmicCub sent a private message to StellarSage: "I thought I'd be frustrated by the crash, but I'm just excited to get back in. Is that weird?"
Sage replied with a grinning emoji. "Welcome to 30KFUN, where the bugs are just intermissions in the greatest space adventure ever. Now hurry up and log in—we've got a cargo race to dominate!"
