When the Stars Disconnect
The Foundation Festival lights twinkled across Port Tressler's main concourse as Captain Lori "Nebula" Chen surveyed her unlikely crew. Five members of the 30KFUN community stood before her, each checking their mobiglas and gear with varying degrees of expertise.
"Alright, 30KFUN squad," Nebula announced, adjusting her flight suit. "Today's mission is simple but crucial. We're escorting new players through Wikelo's Emporium during the Free Fly event, then running security for their first mining expedition."
"Just don't say the forbidden number," quipped Marcus "BugHunter" Reeves, the group's veteran combat specialist. "I've had three 30Ks already this morning."
As if summoned by the mention, everyone's mobiglas flickered simultaneously.
"You had to say it!" groaned Eliza "StarGuide" Williams, the group's navigation expert. "Quick, everyone to the Constellation before the server—"
The station around them froze momentarily before resuming normal operations.
"False alarm," sighed Devon "MechMedic" Torres, checking his diagnostic tool. "But that was close. Remember when we lost the Carrack full of new players during last year's festival?"
"And then respawned inside each other at Grim HEX?" laughed Prisha "QuantJumper" Patel. "Good times."
The newest member of their group, Kai "GreenPilot" Jackson, looked nervous. "This is my first big community event. What if I mess up?"
Nebula placed a reassuring hand on Kai's shoulder. "That's why we're 30KFUN, rookie. We have fun regardless of what the servers throw at us. Besides, your Cutlass piloting during yesterday's training was impressive."
"Speaking of which," StarGuide interrupted, pointing to her mobiglas, "our newbies have arrived. Eight of them, each flying one of the Free Fly ships."
The 30KFUN squad made their way to the landing pads where a mismatched collection of ships had arrived. Some were perfectly parked; others rested at awkward angles that defied physics.
"Welcome to the 'verse!" Nebula called out as confused-looking players in rental flight suits emerged. "We're your 30KFUN guides for today."
"I crashed three times trying to land," admitted one player, looking embarrassed.
BugHunter laughed. "Wait until you try quantum travel. Sometimes you end up inside planets!"
As the group boarded their respective ships, MechMedic walked each new player through the basic systems. "Remember, if your ship starts spinning uncontrollably, it's not you—it's just the physics grid having a moment."
The journey to Wikelo's Emporium began smoothly—too smoothly, the veterans knew. Sure enough, halfway there, one of the new players' Avengers began drifting sideways.
"My controls aren't responding!" the panicked voice came over comms.
"Classic desync," QuantJumper responded calmly. "Try getting out of your seat and back in. If that doesn't work, we'll have to do the dance."
"The dance?"
"You'll see."
Minutes later, the new player found himself floating in space as the 30KFUN veterans circled his character, bumping him gently with their ships until his avatar reset position. It wasn't elegant, but it worked.
At Wikelo's, the group helped the newcomers purchase their first equipment upgrades. One player accidentally spent all their starting aUEC on a fancy helmet.
"Don't worry," GreenPilot said, transferring credits. "My first day, I ejected from my ship while trying to open the cargo hold. We've all been there."
The real excitement began during the mining expedition. As the group approached an asteroid field near Yela, proximity alerts blared across all ships.
"Pirates!" StarGuide called out. "Looks like NPC Cutlasses, three of them."
Nebula took command. "30KFUN veterans, defensive formation. Newbies, stay behind us and watch how we coordinate."
The space around them erupted in laser fire and missile contrails. BugHunter's Gladius spun through the chaos, drawing fire while QuantJumper's Vanguard delivered devastating blows to the attackers.
"This is amazing!" shouted one of the new players, cautiously joining the battle in their Arrow.
Just as victory seemed certain, everyone's ships suddenly stopped responding.
"Server's struggling," MechMedic announced. "30K incoming in 3...2..."
The universe froze.
When they all reconnected twenty minutes later, they found themselves scattered across different locations. Through a flurry of messages and coordination, the 30KFUN squad gathered everyone back at Port Tressler.
"Sorry about that," Nebula told the newcomers. "Welcome to the authentic Star Citizen experience."
To her surprise, the new players were laughing.
"That was the most fun I've had in a game in years," one said. "Even with the crash."
As the group gathered in Port Tressler's bar, sharing stories and planning their next adventure, Nebula raised her virtual glass.
"To 30KFUN—because in Star Citizen, it's not about the disconnects. It's about the connections we make along the way."
"And to the Foundation Festival," added GreenPilot. "Where veterans and newcomers explore the 'verse together."
"Just maybe don't mention the K-word again," BugHunter winked. "At least until after we finish our drinks."
As if on cue, the lights in the bar flickered.
"Not again!" everyone groaned in unison, but they were all smiling.
