PU Monthly Report: April 2024
The Star Citizen Persistent Universe saw significant progress across multiple fronts in April 2024, as development teams prepared for the imminent release of Alpha 3.23 while also looking ahead to future updates. Key highlights include:
AI and Creatures
The AI Features team put considerable effort into finalizing the new kopion creature, which will be found on planetary surfaces and in caves in Alpha 3.23. New features like ground alignment tech and formation-based attacks were implemented to bring these creatures to life. Meanwhile, the AI Tech team made major improvements to planetary navigation mesh generation and optimized various AI systems to improve performance.
Ships and Vehicles
Work continued on the RSI Zeus, with the cockpit reaching greybox complete status and other areas like the habitation section, cargo room, and mess hall nearing completion. The Anvil Legionnaire boarding ship had its whitebox phase completed, though some design changes are being explored to improve its functionality. The ship audio experience also received a major overhaul, with new thruster sounds and manufacturer-specific audio profiles being implemented.
Locations and Environments
The Sandbox team completed work on Distribution Centers for Alpha 3.23, adding final polish. Work also progressed on outposts for the Pyro system coming in Alpha 4.0. The Lighting team focused on enhancing Distribution Centers, instanced hangars, and freight elevators to make interactions more engaging.
Gameplay Systems
Core Gameplay made numerous improvements to weapons, jump points, and ship systems like the resource network and life support. New features like manufacturer-based soundproofing for ships were also implemented. The Mission Design team polished content for Alpha 3.23 and created new cargo hauling missions to test players' knowledge of ship specs and logistics.
Technology and Performance
The R&D team updated the half-resolution render mode to work with new cloud rendering and ground fog improvements. Work also continued on the temporal render mode to further enhance visual quality and performance. Online Services completed a refactor of social services and made updates related to server meshing.
UI and User Experience
UI teams in Montreal and the UK put final touches on new interfaces for the visor, mobiGlas, and maps. Updates were made based on player feedback, such as reducing hologram effects on the HUD. The new Contracts Manager UI was also developed to improve mission functionality.
With Alpha 3.23 on the horizon and work ramping up for Alpha 4.0 and beyond, the Star Citizen development teams continue to make strides in bringing the ambitious space sim closer to its full potential. Players can look forward to experiencing new creatures, locations, missions, and technical improvements in the near future.
The 30K Misadventure
Captain Zara Quint leaned back in her pilot's seat, gazing out at the vast expanse of space surrounding her trusty Freelancer. She chuckled to herself, remembering the wild ride that led her to join the 30K.fun Star Citizen Referral Club.
It all started when she was a fresh-faced recruit, searching for the right referral code club to join. After much deliberation on what code to use, she stumbled upon the 30K.fun group and was immediately drawn to their lighthearted approach to the game's quirks.
Her first mission with the club was to transport a shipment of newly-developed kopion creature specimens from a research outpost on Hurston to a Distribution Center on ArcCorp. Everything was going smoothly until she encountered a pack of wild kopions while loading the cargo.
"Who knew these little buggers could form attack formations?" Zara muttered, nursing a bruise on her arm.
As she navigated through Stanton, Zara marveled at the recent improvements to the planetary navigation systems. The journey was going well until she hit a particularly nasty patch of space debris near Crusader.
Suddenly, her ship's systems began to flicker. "Oh no, not now," she groaned, recognizing the telltale signs of an impending 30K error.
Just as the dreaded disconnect seemed imminent, Zara's comms crackled to life. It was her fellow RSI Referral Code Club member, Jack.
"Looks like you could use a hand, Captain Quint," Jack's voice came through, tinged with amusement. "Let's see if we can't get you to that Distribution Center in one piece."
With Jack's assistance and a bit of luck, Zara managed to limp her Freelancer into the ArcCorp atmosphere, the 30K error miraculously held at bay.
As she touched down at the Distribution Center, Zara couldn't help but laugh. It had been a typical day in the life of a Star Citizen Referral Code Club member – full of unexpected challenges, camaraderie, and most importantly, fun.
Zara grinned as she powered down her ship. She couldn't wait to share this latest misadventure with her fellow club members. After all, what was the point of exploring the universe if you couldn't laugh about it with friends?
