Jump Point February 2023 Issue Highlights Persistent Entity Streaming and Salvage
The latest issue of Jump Point, Cloud Imperium Games' monthly digital magazine for Star Citizen subscribers, is now available. The February 2023 edition offers an in-depth look at two major features coming in the Alpha 3.18 update - Persistent Entity Streaming and the new Salvage gameplay.
Chief Technology Officer Benoit Beausejour provides a detailed overview of Persistent Entity Streaming, one of the most significant technological advancements for Star Citizen to date. This new system will allow objects and items to persist in the game world even after players log off, enabling a truly living, breathing universe. Beausejour explains how the technology works behind the scenes to track and save the state and location of millions of entities across the vast game world.
The magazine also features an interview with Senior Vehicle Systems Designer Geoffrey Coffin, who discusses the long-awaited Salvage mechanic. Coffin outlines how players will be able to strip valuable components and materials from derelict ships and structures using specialized tools and ships. He provides insight into the gameplay loop and economic opportunities that Salvage will bring to the Star Citizen universe.
In addition to the feature articles, this month's Jump Point includes trading cards for several notable Star Citizen racing pilots. These collectible cards offer lore and background on some of the top competitors in the game's racing circuits. There is also a portfolio piece spotlighting Virgil LTD, one of the major corporations in Star Citizen's universe.
As always, the Jump Point magazine offers subscribers an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at Star Citizen's ongoing development. With major features like Persistent Entity Streaming and Salvage on the horizon, the February issue provides valuable context on how these systems will expand and enrich the game world.
Star Citizen continues to grow in scope and complexity as it approaches its landmark Alpha 3.18 update. The in-depth technical and design insights in Jump Point give dedicated fans a deeper appreciation for the immense work going into realizing Chris Roberts' ambitious vision for the ultimate space sim. As development progresses, Jump Point remains an essential resource for staying informed on Star Citizen's evolution.
The Persistent Salvager's Dilemma
Captain Zara Vex of the Star Citizen Referral Code Club sat in her Drake Vulture, eyeing the derelict Constellation floating before her. The ship's hull was scarred and pitted, a silent testament to some long-forgotten battle in the depths of Stanton.
"This is it," she muttered, firing up her salvage beam. "The mother lode."
As a member of the RSI Referral Code Club, Zara had seen her fair share of wrecks. But this one was different. Rumors had been circulating about a Constellation carrying prototype Persistent Entity Streaming tech, lost during an ill-fated test flight.
The beam cut through the hull like butter, revealing glittering circuitry within. Zara's eyes widened. This was no ordinary salvage job.
Just then, her comms crackled to life. "Captain Vex? This is Geoffrey Coffin from CIG. We've detected unauthorized salvage operations in your sector. Care to explain?"
Zara froze. She'd heard stories about the Referral Code Club running afoul of CIG before, but never like this.
"Mr. Coffin," she stammered, "I can explain. I'm just trying to help new players understand what code to use when joining Star Citizen."
"By salvaging top-secret tech?" Coffin's voice was stern.
Zara's mind raced. She needed a way out of this mess. Then it hit her – the 30K.fun mantra: have fun in the face of adversity.
"Actually, sir," she said, grinning, "I'm testing the new Persistent Entity Streaming. I figured if I salvaged this ship and logged off, it would be the perfect test of persistence!"
There was a long pause. Then, surprisingly, Coffin chuckled. "Well played, Captain. Carry on with your... 'testing.' But remember, The Star Citizen Referral Code Club walks a fine line."
As the comm went silent, Zara breathed a sigh of relief. Another day, another adventure in the persistent universe of Star Citizen.
