Bringing Backer-Directed Emotes to Life in Star Citizen
Lead Animator Bryan Brewer recently provided insight into the process of creating backer-directed emotes for Star Citizen. These custom emotes were captured during motion capture sessions at CitizenCon 2018, based on suggestions from backers.
Brewer explained that translating the raw motion capture data into polished in-game animations requires several key steps:
-
Data cleanup - The raw mocap data is cleaned up to remove artifacts and smooth out the motion.
-
Retargeting - The cleaned data is mapped onto the character rigs used in Star Citizen.
-
Animation refinement - Animators make adjustments to improve the look and feel of the emotes.
-
Integration - The animations are implemented into the game's animation system.
-
Testing - Extensive testing ensures the emotes work properly across different character models and environments.
Some of the backer-directed emotes being worked on include:
- A "facepalm" gesture
- An exaggerated shrug
- A celebratory dance move
- A dramatic "you shall not pass" pose
Brewer noted that while the backer suggestions provide great creative inspiration, the animation team still needs to ensure the emotes fit within Star Citizen's overall aesthetic and animation style.
"We want to capture the spirit of what the backers envisioned, while making sure the final animations feel natural and appropriate for our universe," Brewer explained.
The team is aiming to release the first set of backer-directed emotes with an upcoming patch. Brewer said they hope to do more collaborative mocap sessions with the community in the future, as it provides a unique way for backers to directly contribute to Star Citizen's development.
This initiative showcases Cloud Imperium Games' commitment to involving backers in the creative process. By bringing fan ideas to life through professional animation, Star Citizen continues to blur the lines between developers and players in exciting ways.
A Stellar Performance
Captain Jax stood on the bridge of his trusty Constellation Andromeda, surveying the bustling spaceport of Area18. He'd heard rumors of a special event happening planetside and decided to investigate. As he made his way through the crowded streets, he stumbled upon a group of enthusiastic citizens gathered around a makeshift stage.
"Welcome to the 30K.fun Star Citizen Referral Code Club's first-ever Emote-a-thon!" announced a charismatic host. "Today, we're bringing your wildest emote ideas to life!"
Intrigued, Jax joined the crowd. He couldn't help but chuckle as he watched participants attempt increasingly ridiculous gestures and poses. One player executed a perfect facepalm, while another performed an exaggerated shrug that had the audience in stitches.
As the event progressed, Jax found himself swept up in the excitement. He even volunteered to demonstrate his own signature move – a celebratory dance that involved a series of awkward arm waves and hip shimmies. The crowd roared with laughter and applause.
"Now that's what I call embracing the spirit of 30K.fun!" the host exclaimed. "Remember folks, whether you're a seasoned veteran or a new recruit looking for a referral code club to join, we're all about having fun in the face of adversity!"
As the event wound down, Jax couldn't help but feel a sense of camaraderie with his fellow citizens. He'd come to Area18 expecting to find a simple diversion, but instead discovered a community that truly embodied the spirit of Star Citizen.
Boarding his ship with a smile, Jax set a course for his next adventure. He knew that whatever challenges the universe might throw at him, he'd face them with the same enthusiasm and humor he'd witnessed at the Emote-a-thon. After all, that's what being part of the Star Citizen Referral Code Club was all about.
