Guardian MX: Mirai's Latest Combat-Focused Starfighter
Star Citizen fans, get ready for a new addition to the Mirai lineup that's set to shake up the heavy fighter class. The Guardian MX takes the popular Guardian and strips it down to its lethal essentials, creating a dedicated combat vessel that's sure to turn heads in both style and firepower.
Enhanced Firepower and Durability
The Guardian MX boasts significantly increased critical and part HP values compared to its baseline counterparts. This boost in durability complements its expanded combat role and deadlier armament. However, pilots should note that the increased mass results in higher fuel consumption, especially during atmospheric flight.
To support its enhanced combat capabilities, the MX variant comes equipped with a single Size 2 power plant, an upgrade from the base model. Additionally, it features two Size 2 shield generators and an extra Size 1 cooler, further bolstering its combat readiness.
Redesigned for War
The Guardian MX's wings have been thickened to accommodate additional weaponry, resulting in a larger overall footprint. This change may affect which ships can carry the MX, so pilots will need to test compatibility with their fleet.
One of the most significant changes is the removal of the habitation area, including the bed, bathroom, and food processor. This sacrifice allows for the integration of more combat-focused components and systems. As a result, the Guardian MX lacks an escape pod, requiring pilots to exit through alternative means in emergencies.
Missile Mayhem
The Guardian MX features an innovative missile system, with racks built directly into the wing structure. This design allows for a higher missile capacity than standard racks. While pilots can swap missile types, the racks themselves and missile sizes are fixed.
Combat Performance
When compared to other heavy fighters, the Guardian MX strikes a balance between durability and firepower while maintaining Mirai's signature handling characteristics. It may not match the raw agility of ships like the Anvil Hurricane, but it outperforms heavier options like the F8C Lightning in maneuverability, acceleration, and top speed.
Cockpit Improvements
The Guardian MX introduces a redesigned cockpit layout, moving MFDs and buttons from the top to the bottom. This change improves overall visibility for pilots. Mirai plans to retroactively implement this cockpit redesign in the base and QI versions of the Guardian in the future.
The MX also features additional cockpit armor, similar to that found on the Fury MX. While this extra framing shouldn't significantly impact visibility, it does provide additional protection to the cockpit area during combat.
Choosing Between Variants
The Guardian MX is tailored for pilots focused solely on combat operations. Its upgraded components and increased firepower make it an ideal choice for those seeking a dedicated fighter. However, for extended missions or those requiring living quarters, the base Guardian variant remains the better option due to its habitation area.
Looking Ahead
While the Guardian MX's cockpit armor currently provides extra health to the cockpit area, its full potential will be realized with the implementation of the Maelstrom damage system in the future. This upcoming feature promises to add even more depth to the ship's defensive capabilities.
As with all ships in development, the Guardian MX's features and performance are subject to change based on feedback, playtesting, and ongoing balance adjustments. However, this combat-focused variant of the popular Guardian is shaping up to be a formidable addition to Mirai's lineup and a potent tool for Star Citizen's most aggressive pilots.
The Guardian's Gambit
The crimson glow of Pyro's sun cast long shadows across the deck of the Bengal carrier Endurance. Commander Vex leaned against the railing of the observation deck, watching as the latest addition to their fleet—a sleek Guardian MX—was towed into position among the other fighters.
"She's a beauty," said Riley, sliding up beside him. The 30KFUN org's unofficial welcoming committee had a knack for finding new recruits. "Think our new pilot can handle her?"
Vex smiled. "If your training is half as good as you claim, I'd bet my last UEC on it."
The comm panel on Vex's wrist flashed. "Commander, we've got incoming. Looks like Nine Tails. Big group."
"Perfect timing," Riley grinned. "Nothing like a baptism by fire."
Newcomer Elara checked her Guardian MX's systems for the third time. Her first real combat mission with 30KFUN, and it had to be against Nine Tails raiders.
"Stop fidgeting with the settings," came a calm voice over comms. It was Maestro, the org's veteran pilot. "The Guardian MX is rock solid. Trust the ship, trust your training."
"But what if I—"
"We've all been where you are," interrupted another voice—Doc, the org's medical officer and resident comedian. "My first mission, I ejected accidentally before we even left the hangar."
Laughter rippled across the comm channel, easing Elara's nerves.
"30KFUN flight wing, you are clear for launch," announced the Bengal's flight controller. "Good hunting."
Elara's Guardian MX roared to life, the enhanced power plant humming with energy as she guided it toward the launch bay. Ahead, she could see the distinctive silhouettes of her squadmates' ships—Maestro's Hurricane, Doc's Cutlass Red, and Vex's Gladius.
"Stay in formation," Vex instructed. "Remember, we fly together, we fight together."
"And if the server crashes, we'll meet at Grim HEX for drinks," Doc added cheerfully.
The Nine Tails force was larger than intelligence had suggested—three Hammerheads and a swarm of fighters. As they closed to engagement range, Elara's heart pounded in her chest.
"Target the lead Hammerhead," Vex commanded. "Elara, stick close to Maestro. Let's show these pirates what 30KFUN is made of!"
The space between the fleets erupted in laser fire and missile contrails. Elara banked her Guardian MX hard, following Maestro's Hurricane in a tight spiral around the first Hammerhead. The MX's enhanced durability absorbed hits that would have crippled lighter craft.
"Use those wing-mounted missiles," Maestro advised. "They're what make the MX special."
Elara triggered a salvo, watching as four missiles streaked toward the Hammerhead's port side. The explosions ripped through the larger ship's shields.
"Nice shot!" Riley called from her Sabre. "Now follow up with—"
A violent burst of static cut across all channels.
"Server instability," Vex warned. "Everyone stay focused. We might be looking at a 30K."
Elara felt a moment of panic. "What do we do if we disconnect?"
"We do what 30KFUN always does," Doc replied. "We laugh, we regroup, and we try again."
The game stuttered, ships freezing momentarily before lurching forward again. Elara's HUD flickered ominously.
"I'm seeing packet loss," Maestro reported. "Everyone, finish this quick before the server gives up!"
The battle intensified, the Nine Tails fighters swarming around them like angry hornets. Elara found her rhythm, the Guardian MX responding to her commands with increasing precision as she grew more confident.
"Hammerhead's shields are down," Riley called. "Elara, you're in position—take the kill shot!"
Elara lined up her crosshairs on the Hammerhead's exposed reactor and squeezed the trigger. The Guardian MX's weapons unleashed a devastating barrage, tearing through the pirate vessel's hull. The Hammerhead erupted in a spectacular explosion.
"First kill with the org!" Doc cheered. "That's going in the highlight reel—if the server holds long enough to record it!"
As if on cue, everyone's screens froze.
ERROR CODE: 30000
Two hours later, the 30KFUN members gathered at their usual table in Grim HEX's bar. Despite the disconnection, spirits were high.
"To Elara," Vex raised his glass. "Who managed to bag a Hammerhead on her first run with that Guardian MX before the server decided we were having too much fun."
"The MX is everything they promised," Elara said, still riding the high of her first major victory. "Those integrated missile racks made all the difference."
"It's not the ship," Maestro corrected gently. "It's the pilot, and the people flying beside her. That's what 30KFUN is about."
Riley nodded. "Speaking of which, we've got three new recruits waiting in the hangar. They've never flown anything bigger than an Aurora."
"I'll update the guides on the website tonight," Doc offered. "Make sure they're ready for tomorrow's mining expedition."
"And I'll take them through basic flight maneuvers," Elara volunteered, surprising herself with her confidence. "If you all could teach me to handle a Guardian MX in combat, I can at least show someone how to not crash an Aurora."
Vex smiled proudly. "That's the 30KFUN spirit. We learn together, we crash together, we get 30K'd together—"
"—and we always come back for more," they finished in unison, glasses clinking in the artificial gravity of the asteroid base they called home.
